Years ago I came across the concept of Edutainment. How it is supposed to help schools with the attention span and make students want to learn more. Now in the era of Content Marketing on Social Media I see a similar development. We are trying to make our Educational Content more Entertaining → Edutainment. It is very important that you understand the difference, so that you can actually change lives and grow your business. If you don’t watch out you will attract the wrong audience – one that is cheap and not interested in change. That is not willing to bring you business. I will show you the difference and three steps you should focus on instead! Unfortunately, most won’t do it, because it is hard. It is more fun to chase the Viral Hit and follow vanity metrics – so they won’t take action to actually make a difference. Don’t lose your Ideal Client in the Crowd! With Edutainment Content you are trying to attract many people. The Idea is that – making your Content more fun – you will be spread further – which then results in more clients. This could not be further from the truth. If I would be trying to play Soccer, but yet talk about Football – I won’t find anybody to play with me. Soccer and Football can me the same thing, but yet they are also two different sports (depending where you are). This shows the Point: Education and Edutainment seem to be alike, but when it comes down to it – they are completely different. Here are five reasons, why Edutainment Content is a Trap:
I have been there too. Thinking that I deliver good Educational Content, but it was just to entertain the people. There are a few simple steps, when you follow them you will avoid falling in the Edutainment Trap. Together we will make sure that you’re Educational Content, become that: Educational! Here’s how, step by step: Step 1: Spend a lot of time researching your Clients Pain Points and Dreams! The better you understand who you are trying to help – the better you can actually help them. This is pretty obvious, but most don’t do it enough. This is where I love Forums. They are just the best place for doing research on a deep and personal level. You can use Facebook Groups or Reddit. Some X Spaces also work well. People share their struggles and pains. They ask questions – that you can answer in your Content. It is not about writing them there in those places. They are not just on Facebook or Reddit. Most are also visiting other platforms. Just write down all those questions, struggles, pains, dreams. This will give you a unique way to create relatable content. Step 2: Focus on your speaking skills over production value! When I was starting out on YouTube I was focussing on what Camera I need to make great videos. When I was watching all the Tutorials the advice was to become a filmmaker. This is the beginning of the trap. Then when I was beginning to grow – I was studying the best. In the YouTube Growth Niche people seem to always look at Mr. Beast or other huge YouTubers. The thing is – they are making widespread Entertainment Content. My wake up experience was – when I tried to sell my products. I had a lot of crickets, but no sales. That’s when I started to analyse my situation. After that I came across Alex Hormozi’s Video talking about how he will make a change in his Content. Lower Production Value – Higher Educational Value. This is when it clicked: I need to focus on what actually will help my Client. I came across the idea of the One True Fan. – Which for Business Context is the One True Customer! I just need to focus on that ONE PERSON – not the million other people. In order to really change lives – we need to start by changing one life. The better we do that – the more will follow. To change that one life, it is important you get your message heard easily. So focus on your Writing and Speaking skills over your Filming and Editing skills. Step 3: Just deliver the solution without much fluff!Since we are not here to entertain, we can just focus on giving the solution right away. Don’t make them wait. This doesn’t mean short. It just means talk about the point, why people came and don’t ramble on. I know this is hard. I also ramble on to often, when I should’ve stopped speaking. I guess it comes down to: Be Specific. Be Intentional. Be Helpful. Step 4: Watch out for the right metrics and important KPI’s!I know we all watch our Subscribers and Follower Numbers closely. But do they actually matter as much as we think? We need to track all the numbers from first Contact to Buying from us. There are metrics that get to much attention: Like Followers and Subscribers and others like Conversion rates of our different CTA’s we don’t really keep track of. We like to look at the total amount, because big numbers are fun. I get it! But don’t forget to look at the new growth. For example: We talk about the total amount of Newsletter Subscribers. We then notice that our business plateaus. If we look closer it doesn’t grow because our new Newsletter Sign ups plateaus. Take notes of all your metrics and how they shift over time. Not just the total amount, but the change over months. Make A/B tests and track the before and after. Step 5: Make clear what you offer to your Ideal Client!I think one big mistake is: We don’t say that we have something to offer. We don’t want to come across as salesy. So we don’t mention it at all. Where I think it is a big difference in the attitude to follow someone – do they know what you’re offering? This is something I still struggle with a lot personally. The Solution to this is to have a clear CTA. Make clear what to do next. It should be one thing, but make clear where you want people to go to. That will make sure, that people can get to know you better and come across your offer! ConclusionThe biggest Problem is this: You are entertaining people with your Education – rather than teaching to make a change. In order for you to help people and grow your business you should focus on this: Be the Teacher and Leader not the Clown and Entertainer! Until next Time on the Roots to Revenue.
