Commitment is Elimination of Options

Hey Reader,

Commitment is often talked about mostly as a sense of committing to more.
Taking on a new commitment or getting more committed.

Yet commitment means:
to eliminate alternatives.

I know that most think of commitment as adding something new to your life.
I thought that way for years.

Then I ended up with too many commitments—
too many plates that I wasn’t able to actually do.
I started to feel burned out.

That’s when I noticed how flawed my understanding of commitment was.

Commitment is not about saying yes.
It’s actually more about saying no.

Committing to one thing is to say no to many others.

We are committing not to one thing,
but we forget to eliminate alternatives.

Let me give you three examples:

  • The best person to marry is the one you stay with, saying no to any other.
  • The best diet is the one you follow, saying no to all the others.
  • The best business is the one you stick with, saying no to all other opportunities.

None are inherently the best.

The thing that makes it the best is not the thing itself,
but our commitment to it.

There are many businesses.
All of them work—
but not all work together.

You need to choose one
and say no to the others to make it work.

It all comes down to your persistence and decision to stick to your commitment
and ignore all the shiny objects that will come your way.

So before you commit to something, understand this:

The beauty of the commitment is not in saying yes.
It’s in the elimination of alternatives.

Keep chopping Wood!

I finally have it figured out!So I thought—when I entered the blogging space 4 years ago. It was amazingly simple. I just need to write blog posts on my website and Google will bring traffic to my page. All I need to do is sit and wait for people to rank my articles. A lot of the income was coming from display ads they placed on their website. 90% of their traffic came from Google….

  • Build With Leverage, Not Burnout

There is a limit to the work we can do. We all have 24 hours in a day. We might have a different energy level to start, but in the evening, our energy will be spent. The only way to do more is by building with leverage. It used to be that we needed to lift the heavy stones by hand. Then they developed the crane. Now one person could pull the rope and pull up the rock alone. We can have multiple levers. When I was younger, I rode my bike everywhere to school. There was a limit to how fast I…

In forestry, there is a saying:“Wood grows on wood.”Older trees grow more wood per year than smaller trees — if both grow slow. The bigger, older tree will have added a multiple amount of wood compared to the smaller, younger tree because its diameter is so much bigger.Yet the small…

  • You Could Doesn’t Mean You Should

Recently, I had another good idea. I always love coming up with new ideas. They feel so nice at first. It’s fun thinking of the simple first steps. It is tempting to jump on that new opportunity right away. You are in a full rush — because you just discovered another gold mine. But the reality is this:Just because you could follow that new idea does not mean you should. In the beginning, there aren’t big charges. But over time, business keeps growing, those charges become more expensive. I…
