Doing What Matters: How to Spend More Time with Family

Welcome back, dads! I’m excited to have you here for another episode focused on figuring out how to spend more time with our families and doing what truly matters. Today, we’re diving into a topic that hits close to home: how to achieve the freedom to do what matters, rather than just talking about it.

The Trap of Planning Without Action

It’s easy to get caught up in the things we want, wish, hope, and plan to do—only to realize that we’re not actually doing any of them. Planning is essential, but planning without action is meaningless. If we don’t commit to what truly matters, all the planning in the world won’t help us achieve our goals.

For me, what matters most is spending time with my family. I’m committed to finding a way to make that happen, and that’s the purpose of this channel: to explore how we can be more present with our families and less caught up in things that don’t matter as much.

The Importance of Knowing Your “Why”

Over the past few years, I’ve immersed myself in books on productivity, time management, and efficiency. While these books offer great strategies for optimizing our lives, many of them fall short in addressing the most crucial question: Why are we optimizing? What are we optimizing for?

It’s not just about being more efficient and getting more done—it’s about ensuring that what we’re doing actually matters. For me, the answer is clear: I’m optimizing my life to spend more time with my family.

Building a Business for Freedom

So, how do we achieve the freedom to do what matters? For me, the solution lies in building a business. I know this path isn’t for everyone, but in my view, it offers the financial and time freedom needed to prioritize what truly matters.

Financial Stability: While financial freedom is the ultimate goal, even achieving financial stability allows us to make choices about how we spend our time. I don’t need to stop working, but I want the freedom to choose the work I do and when I do it.

Time Freedom: I want control over my time, so I’m not dependent on someone else’s schedule. This freedom allows me to decide when I’m home and how I spend my days, which means more quality time with my family.

Optimizing for What Matters

Now that we know what we’re optimizing for—more time with family—we can start using the tools and strategies from those productivity books effectively. Knowing your “why” makes it easier to prioritize tasks and focus on what truly matters.

I hope this discussion has been helpful. I’d love to hear your thoughts, so please leave a comment below. Let’s continue this conversation and support each other in our journey to doing what matters most. Until next time, keep focusing on what’s important!
