Followers Aren’t Created Equal

I see this so often in the last years:
Creators come up. Think all they need to do to make money and drive a brand is to build a big following online.

There is the idea that any following is going to make you rich.
Your following just needs to be big enough.
But the reality is that followers aren’t created equal.

I would trade 1,000 followers on Instagram
for 1,000 subscribers on YouTube any day.
I’d also rather have 1,000 subscribers to my newsletter
than 1 million TikTok followers.

This is the difference between platforms.
Then there’s also the difference in the relationships I have with my following.

I’d rather have 100 brothers than 1 million strangers.

This thought process is the difference between the Content Creator
and the Business Creator.

A Content Creator uses content as their business.
A Business Creator uses content to fuel their business.

One makes profits. The other one gets likes.

I’ve seen this difference play out many times over the last few years.

It is sad to see that people start out wanting to become Content Creators.
They compare themselves to the top 0.1% on the platform:
“1 million subscribers” is not a small achievement.

It will take 1–3 years of work to hit even 1,000.
And many will never reach that.

Be careful which one you’ll become.
