Building a business is never about just one skill.

The T-Model Framework allows you to become highly proficient in one area while also gaining enough knowledge in other areas to support your business. This balance is crucial for creating a product or service that not only stands out in the market but also has the infrastructure to thrive.

Most entrepreneurs struggle with deciding which skills to develop and in what order.

Many try to do everything and end up mastering nothing. They become overwhelmed, bouncing between tasks without building the deep expertise needed to differentiate themselves.

The primary reason for failure is:

  • Focusing too much on breadth and not depth.
  • Trying to master too many skills at once.
  • Not aligning skill development with business needs.
  • Failing to understand the balance between being a generalist and a specialist.
  • Lack of prioritization and structured learning.

How do we learn now the right skills?

The good news? You don’t have to master every skill. Instead, you need to follow a structured path where you go deep on one skill (your core business skill) while acquiring enough generalist knowledge to manage other important areas. Here’s how the T-Model Framework helps you do that:

  1. Start with one deep skill that you can master over time (this is the base of your T).
  2. Develop a wide range of supporting skills in areas like marketing, sales, website building, and content creation to support your main focus.
  3. Apply the 20-hour rule for generalist skills: Invest 20 hours in learning enough to be proficient in each of these areas.
  4. Apply the 10,000-hour rule for your core skill: Focus on mastering this area deeply over time.

Step-by-step breakdown of the solution:

  1. Understand the T-Model Framework: The T-Model is simple yet effective. The vertical line of the “T” represents one deep skill that you specialize in. The horizontal line represents a range of supporting skills that you learn just enough to handle other aspects of your business.
  2. Start with a micro-product: To figure out your core skill, build a micro-product—a simplified version of your main product or service. This process forces you to develop a wide range of skills (like website design, content creation, and marketing) while allowing you to discover the area you enjoy and excel in the most.
  3. Master your core skill: Once you identify your core area of expertise, focus on spending 10,000 hours to master it. Whether it’s digital marketing, product development, or content creation, this deep skill will drive your business forward.
  4. Keep stacking complementary skills: As you work toward mastering your core skill, continue stacking supporting skills that allow you to handle other aspects of your business without needing to outsource everything. This includes creating content, managing a website, designing graphics, and more.

Conclusion:

Skill stacking with the T-Model Framework allows you to grow your business effectively without burning out. You don’t need to master everything, but by going deep in one area and wide in others, you’ll create a strong foundation for success. Start by identifying your core skill, then work on building your supporting skills one at a time.

Strive for Excellence not Perfection How often do we freeze up and can’t go forward, because something we have created isn’t good enough – isn’t perfect? Way too often. I have spent so many hours trying to perfect something. Our goal is often completion, or perfection. Reaching the 100%. It seems like it is always escaping us. I want to challenge the idea of perfection. We should strive for excellence. Doing something not for 100% perfection, but rather to a 90% excellence. Perfection keeps…

We should do it the 100X Way. Let me explain: First, you have to put as many seeds (ideas, content, etc.) out into the world. This is focused on Quantity.
