On AI, Books, and Getting More Specific
Greetings Reader,
A buddy just sent me an article by Tim Ferriss. For all that don’t know that name, he is the author of “The 4 Hour Workweek”.
In the article he is writing about how things are changing with AI.
He said his book sales since 2022 are down by 80%, for his four books. His publisher said he sees that across markets.
So Tim’s question is: Is the non-fiction market dying because of AI?
There are definitely tasks where I go directly to AI. How to fix my dishwasher. (Yes, I actually fixed a leak from my dishwasher with ChatGPT last year already).
And with personal dietary things.
I figure AI can be more specific to my personal situation. Also I’m using my own head to think if the answer makes sense.
We can no longer just offer knowledge. That’s solved. We can offer thinking, experience, transformation, and actually care.
The way I see it is this: if people use AI and get their problem fixed, good. If they use it and it didn’t fix the issue, are you so known in your space that you will be recommended for deeper study?
This is where I buy book recommendations from AI, to understand the full argument for the place that AI missed. I don’t buy all the books anymore. I get more specific.
I think this is the time where New York Times bestseller is no longer the core reason to buy. I care about the actual content of the book. Is this book helping me answer the gap that the AI didn’t have an answer for?
This goes to the extreme that I research others and their full library of books, to see if they wrote one that has my specific angle applied.
As you see, it’s about more specific, not more general. What do you think?
Yours in Stewardship
Jowi
