Should you be authentic?
|
Hey Reader, No matter where I look right now, people tell me to be more authentic. Is that really helpful though? I don’t think so. Let me explain why. Being authentic could mean that you’re relatable and personal. It is to be honest. This is what I would understand as being authentic. There is also a different meaning to it. Not many people would describe it as such, but you can observe the behaviors. In reality, a person says “I’m authentic” when they give their unfiltered opinion. Being authentic often stands for the excuse not to do something. I’ve observed “authentic” people to be mostly inconsistent and lazy. Another word could be unreliable. Since we are growing a business, I don’t think we should be “authentic” in that way. Seth Godin said: We do business with people that are consistent, reliable, and predictable. We don’t continue to do business with emotionally authentic people that won’t get the job done. Instead of being authentic, be reliable and trustworthy. Speak the truth. Hold your word. Act consistent. Share personal stories, but don’t share them unfiltered and don’t use “authenticity” to excuse bad behavior. Be clear with your values and standards. Be true to your word and do what you said you would. Share your opinions—without creating personal drama. This will be good for your person and business. Keep building strong! Your Jowi |
