Simple Scales, Fancy Fails

This is a saying that has stuck with me for a while now. I don’t remember when I heard it first. It is an excellent reminder.

I tend to overthink, overplan, overanalyze, and overdo many things in my life.

There is a sense of perfection. It really has to be all prepared. Every detail has to look seamless. It should look cool. For it just to work is not good enough.

Since hearing “Fancy Fails, Simple Scales” I keep reminding myself of that.

We always keep thinking of things to add. We barely take a pause and ask ourselves: Is there something we can cut? Can we make it more simple? Is less going to take us there as well?

This is what we should ask ourselves. We can do so many different things, but how many can we actually get done?

We love ideas over ideas, but in reality – we can’t do them all. So how can we make it simple for us and our clients?

It is funny to me – how we build so complex systems that we have trouble finding papers and documents on our Notion or Laptop. We don’t even want to think about the moment when something breaks down. It would be so challenging. Because we didn’t build it simple enough.

There are two sides to the fancy coin.

One side is the pretty side. We try to make it look pretty and therefore end up too complex and fancy.

The other side is the lazy side. When we’re too lazy, we don’t understand it in depth. So we don’t control the move. Which means we have a vague, complex, fancy thing at the end.

Just think of Fancy Fails. Simple Scales.

Next time around.

  • First Five For Free

Hey Reader, When I was in the early stages, I didn’t have any clients. I knew that I wanted clients. They also had to pay, because why would I fix it cheaply for free? This felt like it would be silly. I went on to do calls. Pitched myself on DMs. Tried all the things that people advise to do. Yet I couldn’t get clients. What changed for me was when I looked at how the big guys started. Alex Hormozi started his fitness coaching by doing offers on his private Facebook profile for people to…

  • Raising a Toddler… or a Business?

The other day I got to spend more time watching my son. My wife was busy, so she asked if I would help out more. Since I’m usually busy running our business, it was fun to be with him for longer.I’m always amazed how much he learns and understands. Yet some of his actions seem rather random. As soon as we do one thing, he gets up to find a book. No matter how much I think I know what’s going to happen —I need to be quick on my feet. I can plan all I want. When he doesn’t want to do it, it…

  • Why More Leads Might Hurt You

I see this all over the internet. People talk about needing more leads, or more new clients. My DMs are full with outreach offering me more leads. The reality is that most think they need more leads, when in reality they don’t have a good enough offer. Focus to help one person better, more and effective. Then you will have something to offer that is power. Take that out into the world and you’ll see:suddenly leads become easier. More leads doesn’t automatically grow your business. When you…

  • Clock Building, Not Time Telling

All fathers I know want to leave their kids better off. They think about the legacy they leave behind. Many of those fathers think about starting a business. That’s what I also started out with. To this day I think the best way to start a business is with a service — something that you can coach or build for your clients. There is only one detail: This is all skill-based. You need to learn the skills. That is also why service is a good place to start. The hidden danger is that you become a…

When I went fishing for the first time, I was in the US.A guy from church invited me to come along with him.He packed up his boat, went to get some bait, and drove us to the lake. It was all prepared for me.It was a blast. I do admit, I got a little sunburn.Besides that, we had a good day fishing. Then I thought to myself:That wasn’t so hard. I can do it. So I got myself a fishing rod and went to a lake.I had some bait with me.My brother joined me on the trip. We were fishing hard. We caught…
