The Curse of Convenience

Hey Reader,

I just started a new book:
4000 Weeks – Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman.

I picked it up because after all the years of trying to beat productivity,
I start to have my doubts what productivity really means.

He also starts to talk about how everything is getting more convenient.

I like to use AI.
It gives my productivity a big advantage.
It’s a major boost.
I think that I actually get 20x more done than without AI.
AI definitely makes my life more convenient.

Yet there is also the chat about AI agents that can do more things.
As we are still in the beginning stages of AI—
who knows what will be developed.

At the same time, I’m writing this newsletter with a fountain pen on paper.
I write my newsletter on paper because I want it to feel personal.
My goal is to have you feel like you received a letter from a friend.

To make this personal, I can’t make it convenient.

The convenience would rob the personal touch.
The thought behind this newsletter could feel mechanical.

This is the curse of convenience.
There is a lack of genuineness.

You can order a birthday card online.
It will be handwritten by experts.

Still—it feels impersonal to the receiver.

We ought to be careful about making our life too convenient
or it will lose the human connection.

We might start with a lazy coffee stop,
but doing our customer service with an AI chatbot might be convenient—
but it’s not adding a human interaction.

We need to be careful to add friction back into our lives
to make more meaningful interactions.

Gain Agency of your Life When we talk about starting a business, there is often the question of why should you bother. There is so much work that is required to make a business work. Often it is said to have more time and the most often reason is to make more money. But there is one big reason that I’m willing to work more for – and it’s Agency. You can’t become the best leader of your family if you need to ask for somebody else’s permission to act. If you need to take time off for your…

  • Don’t be too good to be true

Hey Reader, Every day I get DMs by people pitching me their service. I’m not a big fan of cold DMs or cold outreach, but there is an even bigger problem ahead. There is another inflation going around. Next to the financial inflation, there is also the offer inflation. I do enjoy most of the content by Alex Hormozi and I have both his books. There is a side effect of the $100M Offers book. Many juniors are starting out and create an offer that is “irresistible.” I agree with Alex Hormozi to…

  • Raising a Toddler… or a Business?

The other day I got to spend more time watching my son. My wife was busy, so she asked if I would help out more. Since I’m usually busy running our business, it was fun to be with him for longer.I’m always amazed how much he learns and understands. Yet some of his actions seem rather random. As soon as we do one thing, he gets up to find a book. No matter how much I think I know what’s going to happen —I need to be quick on my feet. I can plan all I want. When he doesn’t want to do it, it…
