The One Thing My Dad Never Missed

Most kids don’t remember what you did.
They do remember that you were there.

Life is hard today.​
We have many priorities pulling on us.
We have many responsibilities pulling us away from our family.

Today most couples need to both get jobs.​
The pay in the jobs went down and financing requires both incomes to make a living.

When I was growing up, I was fortunate enough for my dad to have a job that would allow us to live with one income only.
My mother could stay at home.
​Focus all her attention and time on us kids.

One thing I knew that I also want for my kids—
There was one thing that I also observed.

I recently spoke with my dad about it.
He said it was the one thing he wouldn’t negotiate:
​He would always be home for dinner.

As long as I remember, that’s what he did.
He was home every day at 5:30 for dinner.

That might sound like a lot.
There is one more thing to it:
​He also always left after family breakfast.

This is something that is hard to come by today—
​Home for breakfast and dinner while also making enough money to provide on one income alone.

I don’t remember what we did at dinner.
​I do remember he was home for dinner every night.

That’s how important it is to be present at home.
That’s what I remember.
​To be home for dinner.
