The Tug-of-War Between Family and Business

Every time I sit down to work I feel a little pull.
I wish I could be with my family.
There is so much that I would like to do with them, but I need to get my work done.

On the other end, there is the problem too.
When I’m with my family, I’m checking my phone,
looking at what has been happening in the business.

I’m getting pulled between my business and my family.

I imagine you’re experiencing the same inner tug-of-war.

When we’re doing business things, we feel like we’re not there for the family.
When we’re doing family things, we feel like we’re neglecting the business.

What I found over the years is that your child also wants your attention,
sometimes just as much as your toddler.

It all comes down to presence.

You want to be fully present for your family,
yet you also need to provide.
You want to make profit from your business,
yet that means to also be present for your clients.

What I found is that the tug war can be changed.
Stopped.

Since they are not enemies, they are just opposite sides of the Present Provider Coin.

When you lay a coin flat on the table, you’ll only see one side.
This is the time you spend with your family, fully being present.

When you flip it over, you will be fully present for your business.

Honoring your family is right there on the other side.
This is how I become more present and more effective.

  • Is purpose just a wild goose chase?

I’m fascinated by the pursuit of purpose. I have been trying to find my purpose for years. I spent hours journaling. Trying to figure out what I should do. I have felt all hyped up and sprint forward — only to feel all lost again a few months down the road. There seems to be a cultural obsession to finding your purpose, your big mission for your life. Yet in reality, it feels like a wild goose chase. The more you feel like you have found your purpose — the more it seems to slip away. The more…

  • Your Personal Brand is not just online.

Hey Reader, I was just chatting with a young man. He is struggling to get clients online. He said his personal brand isn’t growing enough. He doesn’t get any inbound leads. I asked him: What are you doing in real life? Offline. What contacts do you have? Who are the people you’re already spending time with? These are important because a Personal Brand is basically your reputation and trustworthiness. It is so much easier to build a good reputation when your trustworthiness is offline. We have…

  • The moment I realized I can’t do it all

When I was in University, I did everything. I was studying, volunteering, working, hanging out with friends. I also picked up some hobbies, like hunting, fishing and visiting reenactments. All of those things were time consuming. Maybe you know the feeling of:you can do everything when you’re on the top of the world. I really liked to be the Jack of all Trades. I saw a lot of people becoming experts, yet I stayed a generalist. It is said that Warren Buffet gave this advice once:Write out all…

  • Don’t Judge a Business by Its Social Media

It is so interesting. A lot of people judge the business by their social following. He got 100k followers—he must have a massive business! Somehow we doubt that small accounts are bigger businesses. I stopped looking at the following and started to look for the actual interaction. There is a lot to be said about the right likes. You can tell fast which small accounts don’t work — because they tell you. With bigger accounts, it’s getting harder to see the difference. The funny thing is: A lot…

  • Stuck in your Business? Let’s fix that in 5 days.

Over the last few months, I’ve done a lot of coaching. Different men. Different stories. But one thing keeps showing up — again and again. Overwhelm. Not just “I’m busy” overwhelm. Not “too many emails” overwhelm. The kind that drains your confidence and clouds your calling. And here’s what I’ve noticed: Most overwhelm doesn’t come from too much to do. It comes from confusion or a lack of clarity. You’re not sure what the next step is.You’re not sure who to help, or how. You’re trying to build…

  • Your Industry Doesn’t Matter

Hey Reader, I have seen this topic a lot on X/Twitter. There is an issue I see in how many businesses start: They start with the topic or industry first. This is easy—because you don’t need to put a lot of thought into it. But there’s a big flaw. I don’t want to be known in an industry.I’d rather be known to my people. On first sight, it seems like there is no difference. But when you dive deeper—there is a large difference. When you’re known as a Fitness Coach, writing a book might be still…
