The YouTube Skill Stack for Beginners – Only 5 Skills that Matter!

I know that many of you are working on starting a YouTube Channel. In the beginning it is overwhelming to see what you need to learn. I was there too, but then I figured out that there are only 5 Skills that actually matter.

Unfortunately most YouTubers get it completely wrong. They are missing those 5 Skills and focus on the wrong Skills – that actually don’t make a difference.

The biggest point new YouTubers miss is to think it’s all about going viral!

So they plan everything according to the biggest YouTubers. Try to get everything right. Therefore they also learn the wrong skills and then Wonder, why they’re not getting Views.

New YouTubers believe that they need to be good at:

• Filming
• Editing
• Clickbaiting
• Making better Videos.

Those might get you to becoming a Mediocre YouTuber. However these skills won’t get you a long lasting YouTube Business. I have struggled with the same thoughts, when I was in your Position. When you focus on the right skills, you will actually be able to grow a personal YouTube Channel that makes a difference.

Focus on these skills instead:

Skill 1: Ideation – Creating Unique and New Video Ideas

Probably the most important Skill when it comes to YouTube is: Coming up with New Ideas.

People click because they like the idea or concept of the Video. The better your ideas are – the easier everything else will be. This is also the hardest skill to Master and I would say, that there are only a few that really do. You can always improve your Ideas. I don’t have the time and space to go deep on the Ideation Process, but we will cover that in the future. So subscribe to my channel to not miss it!

Skill 2: Copywriting – Writing capturing Titles, Hooks and Scripts

One Skill that I didn’t even know existed is Copywriting.

For the most of you – this might also be pretty new. The subtle, yet simple difference is:

Good Writing has the reader understanding what you’re saying.

Good Copywriting has the reader feel understood.

The difference is that Copywriting is the Skill behind great Titles, capturing Hooks and persuading Scripts. This is such an important Skill to learn. That it will make a big difference in your Business Life!

Skill 3: Thumbnail Design – Raising curiosity Gaps

One smaller Skill is the Thumbnail Design. Many are highly focused on their thumbnail. While for others it’s just another thing to do on their uploading checklist.

This is probably the Skill that I struggle with the most myself. It is hard to get the right words, pictures and ideas transformed into a Thumbnail and have it all work well together.

It can’t look cheap – then nobody clicks.

It can’t look over the top – the nobody clicks.

It should be authentic, yet provoking.

This is why this is also a major Skill in the depth of it. We will need to study and practice to get this one right.

Skill 4: Becoming a good Storyteller

This is the skill that I enjoy the most. Creating Stories and Illustrations to share my knowledge.

There are a few Frameworks that can make your life a lot easier. Once you practiced them – writing and telling a Story will become a lot easier to you. There is one Question that we should still answer: Why do Stories matter?

Stories matter, because it is how Humans communicate. We share Stories, when we talk about our day. We share Stories, how we grew up and who we are today. We share Stories, when we use Examples and Illustrations. At the Core our Communication is a Story.

Tell better Stories and you will connect deeper with the your People!

Skill 5: Clear Speech – Train to become a good Speaker

The Skill of Clear Speech connects deeply with telling Stories.

If nobody can understand what you are saying or has a hard Time following your words – you need to work on becoming a better Speaker. How you use words and how you pronounce them makes a difference. Learn to use different speaking Rhythms. I know this comes easy to some and hard to others. This skill will make your Video sooo much better! Trust me!

Bonus Skill: Editing

I know I said in the beginning, that Editing is the Skill many people waste their time on.

That’s still true. You should be able to have some basic editing skills. There are mainly three parts of editing – that I think are important: Sound Improvement, Color Grading and Basic Cutting.

With these three your Videos will come across as professional Videos. Most people will leave a video that doesn’t sound right. The Color Grading and Cutting will help to sharpen the Video overall a bit more.

Conclusion

There you go. Now you have all the Skills to become a Full Stack YouTuber. You can always improve and go into the other areas as well, but for the beginning get a decent Skill Level in those.
