What If You’re Not Afraid of Failing?
Hey Reader,
I thought I was afraid of failure.
Turns out I was afraid of winning.
Here’s what I mean: Everyone talks about fear of failure. It’s the acceptable fear. The one we all admit to. We’re scared to try because we might not succeed.
But I’ve been noticing something different in myself lately. Something harder to admit.
I’m not launching because I’m afraid it might actually work.
And if it works, everything changes. My life gets more complicated. People expect more from me. I can’t hide behind “I’m still figuring it out” anymore. I have to deliver consistently. I have to show up as the person who succeeded.
That’s terrifying in a way failure isn’t.
Failure lets you stay small. Failure gives you an excuse. Failure means you can try again differently next time. Failure is safe because nothing has to change.
Winning means you can’t go back. You have to live up to what you built. You have to handle the responsibility that comes with success.
I keep myself busy with preparation. Research. Planning. Tweaking the offer one more time. All good activities. But also all ways to avoid the moment where I actually put it out there and risk it working.
Because if it works, I’m accountable. If it works, I have to become the version of myself who can handle that level of responsibility.
Most people won’t admit this. It sounds crazy. Who’s afraid of success? But I think more of us are stuck here than we realize.
We’re not afraid of the work. We’re afraid of what happens after the work pays off.
Your move: Ask yourself honestly: If my business actually succeeded at the level I say I want, what would scare me about that? Write it down. That fear might be what’s really holding you back.
Sometimes the scariest thing isn’t failing. It’s finally having to become who you said you wanted to be.
