Who are you optimizing your business for?
Greetings Reader,
When we are running and growing our business we are often challenged.
One of those challenges is alignment. It can hold your business, because it pulls you either in different directions or it can push you forward to one.
When we talk about enterprise businesses we often talk about how bad they are. They are only here to maximize shareholder value. The poor customer doesn’t matter anymore.
I’ve seen the exact same thing with the bloggers chasing passive income. They were only interested in making more money with the least amount of work possible.
On the other end is a service business that overworks himself.
The question is: Who do we optimize our business for?
I hear a lot I need new customers. A sentence later I hear the same person say: “I only talk to somebody that pays my hourly rate.”
Those two don’t go along.
We need to meet new people to get potential new customers.
We need to focus on our customers and clients, because we promised them a result.
We need to be with our family and not forget to sleep.
Those are all true. Business is complex, but we try to make it easy for ourselves, by paying more attention to us than to our clients.
The simple principle that I found is: be present where your feet are. (meaning fully pay attention to who you’re with.) And build the well before you need water. (build relationships before you need to rely on them).
Those two principles really make a difference. Apply them to your business and you’ll see it is simple not easy.
Yours in Stewardship
Jowi
