Why Time is the Most Precious Resource for Dads
Welcome back, dads! Today, I want to talk about something that has been on my mind lately: the value of time. Inspired by rewatching Lord of the Rings and seeing Gollum’s obsession with his “precious” ring, I started thinking about what’s truly precious in my life. For me, it’s not a ring—it’s time. As dads, and really for all people, time is our most valuable asset, and I want to explore why that is.
The Rush of Modern Life
In today’s fast-paced world, we’re constantly rushed and stressed, always trying to get things done. If someone asks you how your week was, the typical response is, “Busy, I’m busy.” We’ve become so accustomed to this hectic pace that we often forget to ask ourselves what really matters.
This realization led me to start my journey toward building a business that aligns with my values. Spending every day from 9 to 5 at a job, away from my family, doesn’t feel like the best use of my time. I’d rather be at home, helping around the house, teaching my kids, and going on family trips. But to do that, I need the freedom of time—freedom to prioritize what truly matters.
Time vs. Money
One of the most important realizations I’ve had is that time is far more valuable than money. You can always make more money, but you can’t make more time or get back the time you’ve lost. This is why it’s crucial to focus on cutting down the activities that don’t matter, that don’t align with our values or bring us closer to our goals.
We need to start by eliminating the unnecessary, focusing on the time we must spend on essential tasks, and then carefully choosing how to spend the remaining time. Once we’ve done that, we can think about the things we’d like to do but don’t necessarily need to do, and decide if they’re worth our time.
Guarding Your Time
The image of Gollum holding his ring so dearly resonates with me because, like Gollum with his ring, we should guard our time fiercely. Yet, many of us let our time slip away, often saying, “I’ll do that tomorrow,” or getting distracted by activities that don’t truly matter.
For example, I’ve drastically cut back on playing video games. I used to spend hours moving pixels around on a screen, only to realize later that I hadn’t spent time with the people who matter or on activities that build something meaningful. Sure, I had fun in the moment, but what did I gain in the long run? That time was lost, and I couldn’t get it back.
Cherishing Time
All of this has led me to start holding my time as precious, just like Gollum holds his ring. I want to inspire you to do the same. As we move into a new year, it’s a perfect time to reassess how we spend our time and make changes to prioritize what truly matters.
Take control of your time, make it meaningful, and ensure that you’re spending it on the things that truly count. I hope this post encourages you to think about time differently and to start making changes in your routines to reflect what’s most important to you.
Thanks for joining me today, and I look forward to seeing you in the next video. Until then, cherish your time and make the most of it!
