You don’t get to own an idea
Greetings Reader,
Yesterday I listened to a podcast. In it they were talking about owning ideas.
At first I thought, this is brilliant. I’d like to own an idea.
The longer I sat with it. The more it bothered me.
As much as it sounds nice to own an idea. It also is empty.
It is not about owning an idea, but rather about claiming your ground. Having ideas is simple. I have notebooks full of them. The execution and communication of the idea is the hard part.
Most known business owners are known for either a product or framework. They have done something with the idea.
The challenge really is to claim the ground.
JFK is known to say we will have the first man walking on the moon. This is an idea claimed. Now it means to back it up. The claim became big, because they planted the U.S. flag on the moon. Inbetween the mission needs to be repeated often to communicate the importance.
In essence we have three steps to execute an idea:
- Claim the ground: This is the proclamation of the idea.
- Plant the flag: This is the moment your idea becomes real.
- Rally the claim: This is where the moment turns into a movement.
I have had many ideas. Some I have proclaimed. Some have a flag in the ground and a few I actually rally for.
You don’t get to own an idea. You get your name given to you. The title means something, because it was given not taken. Do the work of the three steps and people will give you a title after all.
Yours in Stewardship
Jowi
